Description
The church of the former Convent of the Discalced Carmelites was started in 1681 and completed in 1703, on the site of Cardaes. Since 1877, the church is the seat of the Association of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, governed by the Dominican Nuns of Saint Catherine of Siena. The church resisted the 1755 earthquake and is a distinguished example of the Portuguese Baroque, with the two outside porticos and respective niches by João Antunes, and the interior where stand out the Dutch monochrome tile panels portraying historical episodes, the paintings by António Pereira Ravasco and André Gonçalves, the inlaid marbles and the gilded wood carving, in particular those of the altarpiece of the chancel, with a tabernacle covered with angels.
