Description

Heading a viewpoint that offers a privileged view over Lisbon, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount was built after the reconquest of Lisbon and dedicated to Saint Gens, a bishop of the city who had been martyred in this place in 284. Renovated after the 1755 earthquake, its interior shows Rococo tile panels with episodes from the life of Our Lady, a wood carved altarpiece framing the image of the Patroness, an ivory crucifix and a nativity by Machado de Castro. This church also keeps the famous stone chair of Saint Gens, traditionally sought by pregnant women who sit on this chair asking for a safe birth.
