Description

The Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça was the Portuguese seat of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine, also named “Gracianos”. It was built in 1291 and dedicated to Our Lady of Grace in 1305. After the 1755 earthquake, the church underwent renovation works, which have given its current late Baroque style. It currently presides to one of the most important Lisbon viewpoints. Inside, the highlights are the polychrome gilded wood carving, tiles from different periods, the three pipe organs and the grisaille painting on the ceiling of the nave. The statue of Jesus carrying the Cross on the Way to Calvary (“Senhor dos Passos da Graça”), one of the most worshipped in the city, is kept in this church, under the custody of the brotherhood with the same name.
