Description
Under the invocation of Our Lady of Liberation and Saint Joseph, the construction works started in 1760, in memory of the failure of a regicide attempt committed against the King José I on this site. For this reason, the church is usually known as Igreja da Memória [Church of Memory]. With Baroque and Neoclassical styles, the dome with pinnacle stands out from the simplicity of its lines. Inside, the highlights are the painting of the chancel by Pedro Alexandrino, representing Our Lady of Liberation and King José I, and the tomb of the Marquis of Pombal. The church is now the seat of the Diocese of the Armed Forces and Security Forces.
