The origins of the church date back to the period immediately after the reconquest of Lisbon. The church collapsed during the 1755 earthquake and reopened in 1783, although its works have continued until 1833. Its Mannerist-influenced façade includes a Manueline portico, classified as a National Monument; the wooded painted ceiling over the nave shows allegories of the Church. The temple contains several artistic works from the second half of the 18th Century: paintings by Pedro Alexandrino, the statues of Saint Mary Magdalene holding a crucifix and of Saint Martha, attributed to Machado de Castro, and the statue of The Risen Christ, attributed to José de Almeida.
