Description

The construction works of the church in a land donated by Queen Maria I started in 1780, as the result of the transfer of the parish of Saint Peter of Alfama to Alcântara. The pediment of the portico with a beautiful frontage shows the Petrine tiara and keys; in the Baroque and Rococo interior, the walls are covered with marble-like paintings, the altars show altarpieces in polychrome wood carving and the ceilings of the nave and of the chancel, separated by a dome, show, respectively, a painting of the Assumption and one of Christ Giving the Keys to Saint Peter. The papal insignia can be seen in the dome and in the abutment of the altarpiece of the chancel.
